Malls agreed to longer operating hours

METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Benhur Abalos said mall operators have agreed to extend their operating hours amid the Christmas season.

In a radio interview on Monday, Abalos said he suggested the extension of mall hours because the number of vehicles on EDSA has been increasing, which he said could lead to heavier traffic.

“Pumayag naman ang mga malls [Mall operators agreed to my suggestion],” he said.

However, mall operators expressed concern about the curfew and the limited capacity allowed in public utility vehicles (PUVs), Abalos said.

Abalos said there is already a result from the votes of Metro Manila mayors regarding the curfew, and that a resolution on the matter  will be issued in a day or two.

For the limited capacity in public transport, Abalos said the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has already expanded it to 70%.

Earlier, Abalos said he  requested mall operators to extend their operating hours to ease the traffic as well as help the economy.

Aside from this, he also suggested to them to schedule sales on weekends and holidays only, and not during weekdays.

Curfew in Metro Manila has been shortened to 12 midnight to 4 a.m. starting October 13.

Malacañang earlier announced that NCR and 10 other areas  will be under Alert Level 3 from November 1 to 14.

Several establishments will be allowed to operate at 30% indoor venue capacity only for fully vaccinated individuals and 50% outdoor venue capacity, provided that all employees are fully vaccinated.
